One of the most joyful things for a faculty, in my view, is to see the students' progresses, achievements, and successes. My students have won various awards from different organizations at local, state, and national levels, and have gained valuable working experiences in national labs. They also traveled many places to present their exciting research results.  See below to check out!

David Peterson
M.S./Ph.D. student
Research Assistant (RA) since Aug. 2007

Selected by the NASA GSFC Graduate Student Summer Program (GSSP), Dave worked in summer 2008 with NASA GSFC scientists to examine the interannual variability of biomass burning in North America using MODIS fire counts and the contributing meteorological variables. He now continues this work as part of his Ph.D. work. He has presented the results at AGU and AMS annual meetings, and is the (1st place) winner in the competition of students' oral presentation in Omaha-Offutt AMS chapter in Feb 2009.

Recently, Dave also won the he prestigious NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship, see details here.

Richard (Xiaoguang) Xu
M.S./Ph.D. student
Research Assistant (RA) since Aug 2008

Richard received MS degree in Meteorology from China before he joined the group. He is now developing techniques to integrate satellite and chemistry transport models to study the distribution, transport, and climatic impact of east Asian aerosols. His GPA now is 4.0/4.0. In April 2009, he received a travel grant from Harvard University for supporting him to present his research at the 3rd GEOS-chem meeting held in Harvard University. In June 2009, he also received a travel grant from from the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) to attend GRC's "climate and radiation" workshop held in New London, NH.  This summer, he is staying in Boulder, CO, and working in NCAR with scientists on climate models.

Eric Holt
MS student
Jan. 2009 - present

Eric received BS degree in Meteorology from Univ. of Missouri - Columbia in 2008. He received the NASA GSFC undergraduate summer internship in 2008, and the AMS travel grant in 2009.  His research topic is on the wind energy in the US mid-west region.

Cathy May
Undergraduate
Part-time Research Assistant (RA) since Sep 2008

Cathy is working hard to complete her BS degrees in both Math and Meteorology. In Jan 2009, she won the NASA Nebraska Space Grant research assistant fellowship for her ongoing project of using satellite remote sensing to view air pollution from space, particularly over the eastern Asia region. She was selected by NASA GSFC as a summer undergraduate intern In May 2009, and worked there from June to August 2009.

The left picture was Cathy taken off the coast of Cairns, northern Australia, on her way to the great barrier reef. Even though it was Australian winter the temperature was still around 70 degrees F.
