Dept. of Geosciences Attends Rocky Mountain Rendezvous

Matt Corbett

Dept. of Geosciences Attends Rocky Mountain Rendezvous (Sept. 19-22, 2008) A contingent of eight University of Nebraska-Lincoln geoscience graduate students attended this year’s Rocky Mountain Rendezvous in Laramie, Wyoming. The purpose of the RMR is to give geoscience students seeking internships or full-time employment an opportunity to meet with companies, primarily from the petroleum industry. The first day of the Rendezvous consisted of a field trip to the Hanna Basin in southeast Wyoming. During the trip the attendees were lectured on the structural and stratigraphic features of the region by Liz Hajek (U. Wyo.) and Heather LaReau (Encana Oil & Gas). Highlights of the trip include the Beer Mug Anticline (of which no explanation of the name’s origin could be given), vertically tilted Ferris Fm channels, and excellently preserved pterosaur walking traces in the Morrison Fm. The group was thankful that, despite the damage and loss of power in Houston, Texas after Hurricane Ike, most of the companies were still able to attend. Some of the petroleum corporations present include Anadarko, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Devon Energy, ExxonMobil, Hess, and Shell. UNL students had many interview opportunities and a few attended the Shell short course “Lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico”. Three students presented posters at the Rendezvous: John Allen (Deconvolving Tectonic and Climatic Influences within the Fluvial Record: An Example from the Late Carboniferous Succession of the Cumberland Basin, Atlantic Canada), Zi Gui (Diagenesis in the AND-2A core, ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound Project, Antarctica), and Jesse Koch (The Late Paleozoic Ice Age and Its Impacts on an Ice-Distal Carbonate Depositional System (Orogrande Basin, USA) During the Early Permian: Preliminary Results). During the awards ceremony for the posters John Allen received 2nd place and $600, while Jesse Koch received an honorable mention and $100. The students who took part in the Rendezvous would like to thank the Dept. of Geosciences for providing the funds for travel and lodgings and are looking forward to receiving internship offers in the coming weeks/months.
